Mouth cancer affects the lives of thousands of people every day. Screening is a routine inspection that we carry out whenever you come to the practice for a regular check-up, hygiene or dental treatment.
We always check inside your mouth as well as your face, lips, gums, tongue and throat for any abnormalities. Signs that you should not ignore are:
•Persistent growths or lumps.
•Bleeding ulcers that do not heal.
•Red or white patches inside the mouth.
•Persistent pain when swallowing.
While these signs are not always the symptoms of mouth cancer, we will advise you to get a specialist medical consultation if we find anything that needs looking into. Early detection can lessen the impact of cancer and increase successful recovery rates.
The risks of mouth cancer can be greatly reduced by making healthy lifestyle choices. These can include cutting down or stopping smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, taking regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.
