Dentures can improve quality of life by improving and enhancing your appearance.

What are dentures?

Also known commonly as false teeth, a denture is a frequent solution to replace multiple missing teeth. Dentures are custom-made, removable prosthetic teeth mounted on an acrylic base. Your dentures should fit comfortably and securely over your gums and are often held in place with denture adhesive.

There are three main types of denture:

Full denture – replacing an entire row of upper or lower teeth.

Partial denture – replacing missing teeth between existing healthy teeth.

Implant-supported denture – mounted on dental implants secured to the jawbone.

Modern dentures look and feel very similar to natural teeth. You can expect comfortable eating, a radiant smile and an enhanced appearance.

How long does it take to get new dentures?

Dentures are custom-made to fit your mouth with optimal function and appearance.

A treatment for new dentures can take a series of scheduled appointments after your initial consultation, depending on your individual requirements.

Partial dentures generally take a few weeks while full dentures take a little longer. Implants can take around six months to bond fully with the jawbone before dentures can be fitted.

Will I get used to wearing dentures?

At first, dentures can feel strange. When you first start wearing dentures, your cheek and tongue muscles take some time to adapt. Eating and speaking with dentures can take a little practice and it generally takes a few weeks to get used to.

Taking care of your dentures

  • Handle dentures carefully.
  • Avoid cleaning dentures over a sink as dropping them in ceramic sinks can crack them.
  • Place your dentures in an antibacterial soaking solution overnight.
  • Brush your dentures every day to remove food deposits and build-up of plaque.
  • Brush your gums, tongue and palate before putting in your dentures in the morning.

Dentures are generally long-lasting with proper care, but over time, your mouth can change and dentures may also suffer wear and tear. It is recommended to come in for a check-up at least once a year.

If your existing denture is uncomfortable or damaged, making eating and speaking difficult, get in touch and make an appointment with your dentist.
